*Panel Discussion Topic

Transportation systems play an extremely important role in modern society and effective vehicular connectivity techniques can significantly enhance efficiency of travel, reduce traffic incidents and improve safety, alleviate the impact of congestion; devising the so-called Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) experience. Some of the enabling technologies are entering their mature phase, e.g., traffic flow sensors, IEEE 802.11p and ETSI ITS G5. The initial set of applications—raising the driver awareness, disseminate warnings and provide real-time traffic information—are well aligned with the capabilities of the technology. However, the basic system still leaves opportunities for enhancements. For example, with a growing rate of vehicles equipped with the single transceiver for V2X, single channel V2X system will likely be extended to a multi-transceiver, multi-channel system. In addition, new application domains, in particular self-driving and intelligent vehicles concepts, put new functional requirements on the vehicular communication system. These functional requirements are mostly associated with higher performance demands for data rate, communication reliability, and latency. Potentially, the higher requirements can be met by improvements of the existing communication system. As an alternative, the next generation of cellular networks, 5G, targets at very high data rates, massive number of devices, very low latency and very high reliability. To meet these demands, 5G research and development efforts are underway that consider requirements for more challenging application domains such as self-driving and other smart vehicular applications.

Therefore, this panel discussion will target to thoroughly discuss the existing vehicular communication standards, their potentials and shortcomings and the roadmap towards future vehicular communication that is envisioned in 5G paradigm.
